A Dermal Papilla WHAT????
“The dermal papilla (often mistakingly called a “Derma papilla” ) is one of the most important structures in a hair follicle.

The dermal papilla is a small, specialized structure located at the very base of the hair follicle inside the hair bulb. It contains:
*Tiny blood vessels (capillaries)
*Growth Factors
*Nutrients
*Oxygen
These blood vessels nourish the cells that produce the hair shaft.
Why is it important?
The dermal papilla acts like the follicle’s control center. It sends signals that:
*Tell hair to grow
*Help regulate the hair growth cycle
*Influence hair thickness and diameter
*Affect hair pigmentation (color)
Without a healthy dermal papilla, the follicle cannot produce a strong, healthy hair.

What happens in hair loss?
In conditions, such as:
*Androgenetic Alopecia
*Alopecia Areata
*Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia
*Lichen Planopilaris
the dermal papilla may receive fewer growth signals, become damaged, or lose communication with the surrounding follicle cells. This can lead to:
Many hair growth treatments aim to support the dermal papilla by improving cellular signaling and blood flow, including
*Miniaturized hairs
*Slower growth
*Thinning hair
*Eventual follicls inactivity
Why do Trichologists focus on it?
*Microneedling/derma stamping

*Low Laser Light Therapy (LLLT)

Minoxidil (Growth Follicle Fuel)

.Growth Factors

As a Trichologist, you can think of the dermal papilla as the follicle’s “Root Command Center”—-
If it’s healthy and communicating properly, the follicle has a much better chance of producing thicker, stronger hair.
